Bureaucracy tramples elephant trade in India

“Owners are complaining they can no longer afford to keep the great symbol of wealth which graces the streets as well as the forests of the sub-continent. An amendment to India?s Wildlife Protection Act which prohibits the sale or purchase of elephants not registered with the forestry authorities is being enforced. ?This law is a bit complicated as often people wanting to sell their captive elephants cannot provide original records of the animals,? said Sushant Chowdhury, who heads a unit on elephant research at the state-run Wildlife Institute of India.” - Daily Times
