It’s tough in the concrete jungle

“Ole, a two-year-old Thai elephant, stands side-on to traffic in the middle of a four-lane street in central Bangkok, trunk swinging erratically as buses, taxis and motorbikes whiz past on either flank. For eight hours each night he walks through choking fumes, stopping only when a customer, Thai or tourist, buys a 20 baht (60 cent) bag of sugarcane to feed him and snap a photo. For the next few months, this will be his life.” - smh.com.au

These elephants are being rescued from hell

“Wildlife conservationists estimate that the Asian elephant will be extinct in many parts of its natural range (including Thailand) within 50 years. One of the reasons for this impending tragedy is unwittingly touched upon by Hancocks — elephants require a lot of space to exist in a natural environment. The need and the desire of humans for productive farmland and forest products produce a conflict with wildlife, and the result is predictable. In Thailand there are now more elephants working in tourist camps or used by their owners to beg for money on city streets than there are in the wild.” - theage.com.au

National Zoo Plans to Expand Elephant Exhibit

“The National Zoo in Washington, D.C., yesterday announced its intention to build a 3.5- acre outdoor area and renovated barn to house 8 to 10 adult Asian elephants and their offspring. While the Zoo’s existing 1930s-era Elephant House and one acre of space is wholly inadequate to meet the complex needs of the three elephants already living there, the expanded exhibit will still not deliver a decent quality of life for elephants even at the estimated cost of $60 million — half of which Americans would pay for with their federal tax dollars.” - IDA eNews: 6/21/06 : Indybay
