Elephants on 34th Street: Must Be Circus Time
“The circus is in town, as animals, clowns, acrobats, and other performers have arrived ahead of today’s premiere of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Seven elephants and 11 horses emerged from the Queens Midtown Tunnel early yesterday and marched down 34th Street to Madison Square Garden, where the circus will hold performances until April 5. The show features about 90 animals and 120 performers.” - The New York Sun

Elephant Walk 2008 is Tuesday March 18!
“If it’s March, it must be time for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to come to town. And it must mean it’s time for the annual Elephant Walk, too! This year’s Elephant Walk will take place will be on Tuesday, March 18 into Wednesday March 19th, at midnight. The circus reaches New York City by way of train, stopping in Queens and head into Manhattan through the Queens-Midtown Tunnel for its stand at Madison Square Garden, so anywhere along 34th Street, between the tunnel and Manhattan Square Garden, is a spot where you can see the elephants. (The hardcore people sometimes convene around the exit at 35th Street and 2nd Avenue.)” - Gothamist

Activists want to rein in circus use of wild animals
?Ringling has been fined tens of thousands of dollars by the U.S.D.A. [United States Department of Agriculture] and is responsible for the deaths of at least 24 elephants since 1992,? he said. ?They cannot be trusted to take care of animals properly. In fact, the Bronx Zoo plans to retire its elephants to a sanctuary because they can?t adequately meet the needs of their elephants. Who on earth believes that Madison Square Garden is a suitable environment for wild animals?? - The Villager

Running of the Elephants 2006
“Last night the Ringling Brothers circus arrived in Manhattan. As usual, the elephants did the final leg of the journey to Madison Square Garden on foot, because they’re a little too big to truck or train into the city. The running was a delayed by a car accident on the Queens side of the Midtown Tunnel– word from the cops on the scene was that the police had to clean up a bunch of glass before it was safe for the elephants to walk. By 1:30am, the scene on the Manhattan side was totally crazy– after waiting for an hour in the freezing cold, most of the onlookers and reporters were totally giddy with hypothermia.” - Gothamist
