Elephants are not sacred cows

“The Blade needs to get with the times. Zoos are no longer a menagerie of creatures locked up for our entertainment. Many zoos have decided that keeping elephants is not conducive to their mission, and it was shortsighted to suggest in your May 7 editorial that maybe the Toledo Zoo should just shut down if it goes in the same direction.” - -toledoblade.com

Toledo Zoo Elephant Given Wrong Injection

“Another controversy regarding animal care has surfaced at the Toledo Zoo, this time involving the African elephant, Renee. Zoo offcials say that while Renee was being treated for Colic this week, a keeper mistakenly injected her with mineral oil instead of pain reliever. The Zoo’s press release indicates that the mistake was discovered immediately and that the injection site was lanced and flushed and that the 26 year old elephant is doing well. Renee is the mother of Louis who was born two years ago and the elephants will remain off-exhibit until the zoo staff determines they are ready for public viewing.” - WTOL-TV

Toledo Zoo’s latest star treats his debut as one big yawn

“The baby skipped out into the open, lifting his fat little forelegs high in an elephantine prance. Undaunted by a phalanx of rolling cameras, he scooted back to mom for a quick snack, and trotted to the front of the enclosure to inspect his visitors. Apparently unimpressed, he stretched out on the floor and went to sleep.” - Toledo Blade
