Happy Birthday … to Me!

Happy Birthday Kiki!! (by Cvalentine)

Today is my birthday!!! So, Happy Birthday to Me! I decided to make this my post for today because it falls on a day that I usually post. And I don’t think anyone so old should have to write about anything complicated on their birthday ;-)

I’m not one of those people that tries to hide her age or doesn’t want to tell people. I was born in 1968 and am 41 years old today. The only downside is now I’m not 40, which is a huge turning point, but am IN my 40′s. It’s getting a little excessive to make this my twelfth 29th birthday ;-)

Here’s Altered Images singing Happy Birthday. This is from the 80′s when I was 12 or 13 but I don’t even remember this one.

My 1st birthday (not the day I was born but when I turned 1) was the day of the Apollo Moon Landing – July 20, 1969. Obviously, I don’t remember watching this (I don’t remember much before I was 3 or 4) but I remember my Mom telling me about it. She said even though she was excited about the moon landing she was also annoyed that no one was paying attention to my birthday party. I guess since I’m the oldest the 1st birthday of the first kid is a big deal. I remember my daughter’s 1st birthday being a big party but there weren’t any major world events to distract us.

So, here’s a video of the moon landing.

Gifts have always been a funny thing for me. I like practical gifts – something I can read, wear or eat. I don’t like knick-knacks and other items with no real use – like jewelry. One of the best gifts my ex-husband ever gave me was a backpack. I had been looking for a new one and he found the perfect one in purple – family members seem to be on a mission to get me away from the color black.

But sometimes the practicality of the gifts I receive are too much, even for me. Here are a couple practical gifts I’ve received that I could have passed on.

  1. Iron – I am one of the most casually dressed people you will ever meet. Sometimes I think I went into the computer field because I could dress down. An iron serves no purpose in my life as I don’t have clothes that need ironing or I will wear them wrinkled. My ex had to dress up for work and I made him buy wrinkle free shirts as there was no way I was going to iron (I suppose he could have ironed his own shirts).
  2. An exercise video and weights – This was a gift from a boyfriend I had way back. It was something that I wanted but you know if you give a woman something like that for her birthday, she’s going to think that you’re telling her that she’s fat.
  3. Brita Filter – Ok, Brita water filters are cool and often necessary but as a gift? This came from the same boyfriend who gave me the exercise stuff. Hmm … he may have been more practical minded than I was.
  4. Vacuum Cleaner – This is cheating because it wasn’t supposed to be a Christmas gift. Our vacumn totally died right after we put up the Christmas tree – pine needles and no vacuum is not a good combination. We had to spend a lot of the money we had saved for the holidays on a new vacuum.

My Mom was mostly good at practical gifts. I actually think of her every time I change the sheets and towels. I really hate shopping and I don’t think I’ve ever purchased either so all of my sheets and towels came from her. I worry about them wearing out since she isn’t around to take care of that for me.

Today is also Stratos’ birthday. We’ve become great online friends and working partners and I was SO surprised to find out that we have the same birthday. Of course, he is WAY younger than me. So Happy Birthday to Stratos too.

Anyway, I’m taking the day off and am going to try to do nothing. We can wind this up with a Happy Birthday from Animal and the Swedish Chef.
