Make Mommy Feel Better

Alex and I were in Church on Palm Sunday - Kim was not feeling well at all and had to stay home to rest. Apparently, Alex was experiencing some empathy for her Mommy that morning. As we started to leave the church, Alex noticed that they were selling Easter flowers at the back entrance. She reached up for my hand and in the sweetest voice of concern said, “Daddy, get flowers for Mommy - make her feel better.” I started to cry.

We picked some small potted daffodils. When we got home that morning, Kim was in bed reading and Alex carried the flowers to our bed and surprised her with them. It was the most endearing thing Alex has ever done.

Pay Attention to Me

I have been taking Alex on morning excursions for the past few weekends and we’ve been having a lot of quality “father and daughter” time around and about Philly. One Saturday we were having a bit of “trouble” at the toy store and daddy was getting a bit perturbed by the non stop complaining. Believe me, I was doing my best to show her a good time - within limits (we couldn’t purchase everything in the store and bring it home). On the trolley ride home we fell silent for a moment, and with squinted eyes and a big smile on her face she looked up to me and uttered “…I’m just a big whiner, Daddy!” I couldn’t help but laugh aloud (as did other passengers nearby).

Just the other day we went for a stroller ride to the grocery store as we do almost every weekend. I was a bit distracted and Alex had been muttering some repetitive comment over and over - something about teddy bears in a dumpster. Being completely frustrated with my lack of response, she abruptly spun around in her stroller to look at me and exclaimed ” DADDY! YOU HEAR ME ?!?!?!” Needless to say, I felt a bit embarrassed by the whole thing and realized later that the essential way to avoid future problems would be to answer her immediately, no matter how absurd her comments might be. All this time I have been reinforcing how important it is for her to pay attention to me. Go figure.

The Highest Form of Flattery

It is well known and documented that Kim has a habit of reading during meals while at the kitchen table - this irks me to no end.

Yesterday Kim, Alex, and I were in Starbucks Coffee when for a few moments Kim left the table. Alex was perusing the free newspapers near us, grabbed the classifieds, returned to her seat across from me, and with a sort of clever grin said, “I be Kim…” I couldn’t stop myself from laughing.

Baby On Board

Today I was playing with Alex and she seemed for a moment to take interest in my Star Wars vehicle, Slave One. Of course, we all know who the infamous pilot of that starship is - none other than Boba Fett himself. Anyhow, I thought it was sort of funny, so as a little experiment I let her have it and even threw in a toy Boba figure to boot. To my surprise and delight, she started fidgeting with all its features and I was for a moment transported to that far away galaxy known as childhood wonder. I even showed her how Mr. Fett could sit in the driver seat, and when I did, she turned to me and asked inquisitively, “…does Boba have car seat?”

I figure it is never too early to bring another youngster into the fold.
