I can’t believe I have any links that are unrelated to the World Cup. I’ve been obsessed and have watched almost every match. And somehow I’ve managed to get a lot of work done and entertain the kid, since she is between school and camp.

It’s been unusually hot for Philly this time of year and it’s been hard to keep up with not using AC. I did finally turn it on in one room for a couple of days – that room is trashed as we’ve been eating, sleeping, working and living in that one room. I have found that I don’t check the temperature I don’t feel as hot. So, part of being uncomfortable from the heat must be psychological ;-)

And we had a wild 15 minute storm in my neighborhood and that in a very short time caused a lot of destruction. I’ve never been in destructive weather before and it might have been the scariest 15 weather minutes I’ve ever experienced. I’ve included some photos.

I also have freelance, solar flares, WordPress, tiny houses and more.

What to Do When Constant Emails Keep You From Working – I’ve had days where I worked so hard and later realized that I didn’t earn anything because I spent my time on emails like this article mentioned. I now file emails that need to be answered in a todo email folder and only answer then at specific times during the workday. Requests for free assistance are sometimes answered but only if I have the time.

October, like most of my life, is flying by. A week from today will be the time change (fall back) and the aftermath of Halloween. Alex decided to go as Little Red Riding Hood :-)

9 Best Eco Apocalyptic Science Fiction Films of All Time – I haven’t seen all of the films on this list but I would have to say they are pretty good choices. Waterworld isn’t on the list but then, that wasn’t a very good film – unless you watched it as a comedy. ;-)
10 Productivity Tools for Computer Addicts – I don’t think you need to be an addict to appreciate these applications – just a computer user. I could go on and on about Notepad++ and Greasemonkey so I completely agree with those choices. After Firefox, Notepad++ is my most used application.
A Reuse Program for Scotch Tape Dispensers and Cores – What do you do with the useless plastic parts that are leftover after all the tape has been used? Start a reuse/recycle brigade.
10 Useful WordPress Hacks for Advanced Themes – If you are comfortable working with your WordPress templates there are some great hacks listed here, such as how to style each post differently and adding multiple sidebars.
Bits + Watts – This site is useful for fellow Philadelphians. It has the music from bands that are going to be playing in upcoming shows. So if you’ve never heard of the band, you can hear the music and decide if you want to go to the event.
Exploit Scanner – This WordPress plugin searches your files, posts, comments, database, and plugins for unusual code to help you determine if you’ve been hacked or to find where the hack is located. I have not tested this plugin.

Ants – I’ve had a problem with ants recently. I scrubbed the kitchen from top to bottom but they are very attracted to the cat food (yum!). I was told that ants won’t cross chalk so I’ve let the kid use sidewalk chalk in the kitchen and have ringed the cat food bowl in chalk. And it works! The ants won’t cross it. Of course, I still need to find out where the ants are coming from but still success for the cats.

I went to a Mother’s Day tea at my daughter’s school this week. She was SO excited that I was coming. Before this week it would have been difficult for me to attend but now that I’m freelancing I have more freedom with my schedule. The following photos are the items that she made for me; a poem and a placemat. I’m not sure what she means about making good Mac & Cheese unless she likes the way I warm up Stouffers. Happy March! Just three more weeks until it’s officially Spring. I like Spring but actually prefer Winter to Summer. It seems as though I did some research this week because I have quite a few WordPress articles. I also have information about browsers, a sad story about a baby sloth, eco reasons for renting an apartment in the city rather than buying a house in the burbs and insult sword-fighting.

Rethinking the 404 Page in WordPress – Palma analyzed her 404 errors and did a write-up of the best way to handle them in WordPress. She also discusses 404 vs. 410 files and how you can use the .htaccess file to direct errors to specific error pages.
WP Webhost – Web Hosting that specializes in WordPress. After discovering this webhost I contacted one of the users from their featured sites page to ask how he liked the service. He highly recommended it and gave me a 30% off coupon! I haven’t changed hosts yet but I am considering it.
Top 50 WordPress Tutorials This is a wonderful list of tutorials topics such as understanding the comments.php file and building a theme from scratch. I would say these tutorials are for the Intermediate to Advanced Level user.

10 Websites to Help You Master Gimp Gimp is the open-source alternative to Photoshop. It’s very powerful but can be difficult to master. This list of websites should help.
50 Skills Every Real Geek Should Have – I guess I’m not a real geek because I don’t have all of these skills but I was surprised at how many I did have. Of course, the list assumes that a geek is male because it included how to hide your porn. And I don’t know any females that need this skill.

Troubleshooting the WordPress 2.7.1 Upgrade – I haven’t mentioned this yet but 2.7.1 was released this week. If you are already running 2.7, you now have access to the built in auto-upgrade feature. This, however, has not been smooth sailing for everyone and this article assists in troubleshooting the most frequent problems. I will stand by my position that manually upgrading is still the best way to upgrade.

It’s the last weekend in October and it’s the last installment of (Anti) Social-Lists for the month. This week there is some WordPress information (what a surprise, huh?), suggestions on reducing the amount of plastic that you use, more photos of poverty, cool photos of the Northern Lights, and a new feature in gmail.

How To: Move Your WordPress Blog to a New Domain – Kyle, from WP Hacks, provides step-by-step instructions for moving your WordPress blog to a domain. Not something we do frequently, if ever, but very useful to have if the issue ever comes up.
10 Ways to Reduce Plastic Consumption – Dave over at The Good Human wrote a great article about ways we can reduce the amount of plastic that we use. If the image of a swirling mass of garbage and plastic in the Pacific doesn’t make you want to reduce your plastic consumption, then I suppose nothing will.
Installing WordPress on your server – Ian, from 7879 Designs, has written step-by-step instructions for a manual install of WordPress. I was thinking of writing one, and now I don’t have to. ;-)
Northern Light Photos – A cool set of Northern Light Photos from Flickr. I would love to actually see them someday.
Poverty: Let’s Make a Difference – Smashing Magazine’s entry for Blog Action Day 08, which I missed last week. The photos are disconcerting and say so much more about global poverty than words can.
Canned Responses in Gmail – Do you ever have to send the same email over and over or are you asked the same questions frequently? Well, now you can save canned responses in gmail and not have to spend time typing the same thing over and over. To get started, click on the little green flask next to settings on the top right of gmail, enable the feature, save and then start creating them.

Writing: First Article at Environmental Graffiti

I’ve been so busy this week that I really don’t have a proper post planned. I suppose I could just not post but I’ve developed a posting schedule and I really don’t want to deviate from it. Of course, it would help if I wrote posts up in advance for times like this but I’ve never managed to get more than three posts ahead

Being busy is good. I’ve started getting some freelancing work. Not enough to leave my job yet but it’s a start. What I’ve lost is time. I’m a little overwhelmed. What do you do when you feel this way? What do you write about when you don’t have a post prepared?

So, I thought I would let you know about one of my smaller projects. I’ve started contributing articles to Environmental Graffiti and my first article, Welcome to the Village Underground, was posted this week. I’m hoping to write one or two articles there per week. We’ll see. It gives me the opportunity to write about the environment, which is one of my interests. Articles about the environment, however, don’t fit with the rest of the postings on this site.

So, check out the article – it’s short. Leave a comment here or there, if you like it (or even if you don’t).

I know most of my regular readers through their blogs but don’t know too much else about them. So, I thought I’d ask a question. What else do you do? I know you write awesome blogs on a wide variety of topics but tell me something else about you. Do you have a full time job? What do you do? Do you have side endeavors like my article at Environmental Graffiti? Please, let me know – I’m very interested.

This week I thought we would go a little green and add The Good Human as our RSS feed of the week.

The Good Human, run by Dave who is an awesome guy, encourages us to be better at being human whether it’s through caring for the environment or just being better people. Plus Dave grew up near my cousins (though he didn’t know them) so I’ve got to highlight him here.

This morning I didn’t know what the RSS feed of the week was going to be. This is a little odd because I usually decide over the weekend. I was scanning through by poor overstuffed feedreader and my eyes landed on The Good Human. I then started to read “I Am Perfect, You Are Not – A Failure Of The Green Movement” and immediately knew I’d settled on my choice.

If you want to be greener, live more environmentally sound or just be a better person, I highly recommend adding The Good Human to your feed reader.
