Happy August! I am starting to get ready for a short vacation very soon. The kid is counting down the days so I’ve been using that as an opportunity to practice math problems with her ;-) Also, just one more week until the Premiere League season starts up again and I can start watching Aston Villa on the weekends again. I got a little soccered out with the World Cup but now I’m ready to go again.
This week I have freelancing projects, WordPress themes, Facebook, and some info about my neighborhood.
This weekend when we picked up our CSA box at the Farmer’s Market there was an enormous head of broccoli (see photo to left). I have never purchased such a large head nor had so much fresh broccoli in my house at one time. Now we both like broccoli (much more than yellow squash) but there was just so much of it.
I was talking with the kid about it and asked her what I was going to do with so much broccoli. I thought that maybe I should make my broccoli cheddar loaf, which is sort of like a vegetarian meatloaf, but since I’m the only one who likes it, Alex wasn’t thrilled with that idea.
Here is Philadelphia there is still quite a bit of corn at the Farmer’s Market. I don’t know about you but I’m getting a little tired of corn on the cob and with the weather getting cooler, I thought a corn chowder would be a great use of the last of the corn.
Yesterday was a cool rainy Sunday so it was also the perfect day for cooking and having a warm meal. My daughter also had a friend over and since playdates make me a little bonkers, cooking was the perfect distraction for me. (When did going over to a friend’s house to play become a “playdate”.)
Fortunately, this week I didn’t receive any yellow squash from my farm share. The casserole from last week pretty much did me in and I’ve had it with yellow squash for awhile.
This week, however, was zucchini week – I got a load of zucchini. Alex and I like zucchini a lot better than yellow squash but it’s still not Alex’s favorite vegetable. But she LOVES zucchini bread.
