Get Invited! – 4 Ways to Obtain Access to Beta Sites

A number of online services launch in Beta and require an invitation to access them. Here are four ways to obtain a coveted invite

  • Twitter – if you have a large enough following you can request invites. I have given and received beta invitations via Twitter
  • Invite Room on Friendfeed – Mark Krysnky created an invite room on Friendfeed where invites can be offered and requested.
  • Mashable Invites – Mashable has a beta invites site. You need to register and then you can offer your extra invites and request invites for sites that you want to access. Some of the lists are long but I’ve never found it to take too long to get an invitation.
  • Invite Share – Invite Share is updated with new sites that frequently but for the sites listed it does not take very long to get to the top of the list. Priority is given to those who give out more invites. It is also necessary to register with this site. I’ve received invites very quickly through Invite Share.

Keep in mind that all of these sites work best if you are a good citizen and give out as many invites as you request.

MyJugaad.in – Create an Online Slideshow from RSS

Lo-fi librarian mentioned MyJugaad.in, which is a tool to create an online slideshow of webpages. You can use any RSS feed, popular sources such as google news, a tag on del.icio.us, or a list of sites.

It seems as if all my projects recently involve using the Green Tweeter data but since the data is already compiled and the pipes have already been created it is an easy resource to use and the data is interesting and informative. So, I created two slideshows; one for the twitter feeds of the green users and the second is from the rss feeds of the blogs of the green twitter users.

The slide is changed every 60 seconds but that settings can be adjusted. There are also controls for Previous, Next and Pause and the shortcut keys for the settings are shown when you hover over the link.  Continue …

Vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients that our body needs to work properly. Most of us get all the vitamins and minerals we need by eating a healthy balanced diet.

Vitamins are divided into two groups: fat-soluble and water-soluble.

Fat-soluble vitamins

Fat-soluble vitamins are found in animal products and foods that contain fat, like milk, butter, vegetable oils, eggs, liver and oily fish.

We don’t need to eat food containing fat-soluble vitamins every day because our body can store them. It can also be harmful to have a lot more of these types of vitamins than we need.

Water-soluble vitamins

Water-soluble vitamins come from food like fruit, vegetables, milk, dairy and grains. They can be destroyed by heat or exposure to air. They can also get lost in water when cooking, especially when boiling food. Steaming or grilling, as well as using cooking water to add flavour to soups and stews are good ways to preserve water-soluble vitamins.

Water-soluble vitamins aren’t stored in the body so we need to eat them often. If we take in more than we need then we get rid of any extra through our urine.

Water-soluble vitamins include vitamin C and the B vitamins:

  • thiamin (vitamin B1)
  • riboflavin (vitamin B2)
  • niacin (vitamin B3)
  • vitamin B6
  • folic acid (vitamin B9)
  • vitamin B12.

What are minerals in food?

We need minerals to help us do three main things:

  • build strong teeth and bones
  • control body fluids inside and outside cells
  • turn the food we eat into energy.

What foods contain minerals?

Minerals are found in foods like cereals, bread, meat, fish, milk, dairy, nuts, fruit (especially dried fruit) and vegetables.

We need more of some minerals than others. For example, we need more calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium and chloride than we do iron, zinc, iodine, selenium and copper.

Bill Moyers Journal – This is a weekly program that contains news analysis and interviews on a variety of subjects. Bill Moyers is very concerned about how we are being fed the same rehashed news stories and strives to give a more balanced and democratic view of the issues we are facing. The current episode discusses how mainstream media was wrong during the buildup to war in Iraq and they refuse to admit it, Barack Obama as the presumptive Democratic nominee and Scott McClellan’s book. Last weekend Bill Moyers also spoke at the National Conference for Media Reform.

Democracy Now – provides interviews with people and perspectives rarely heard in mainstream media. This often includes international journalists, grassroots leaders and peace activists. Last Thursday, June 5th the entire program was devoted to Robert Kennedy as it was the 40th anniversary of his assassination. The program was very informative and I learned a lot about Kennedy, who died the same year that I was born.

Strange Fun

Live Bigfoot Feed – is either wacky fun or a cure for insomnia. A group in Alabama believes Bigfoot is in the area and has a camera running 24/7 in hopes of capturing this elusive creature on tape.

This feed is from a location in Kentucky where there has been reported Bigfoot activity. Using the google earth Bigfoot KMZ file, we have confirmed 30 reported sightings within 20 miles of the video feed. This location, has had recent activity including many footprints found and photographed. Also during an earlier feed a board was thrown in the direction of the camera. It was after midnight, no persons were in the yard at the time that the board was thrown. There were two hams set out as bait when the board was tossed.
