I have quite a few new readers who are looking for useful information about Facebook that doesn’t take a PhD to understand. Since they have missed some of the earlier articles, and really who can keep up these days, I’ve decided to round-up my best Facebook articles.
There are some others that are quite good but Facebook decided to rename things and make random changes so often that I would need to write my posts in pencil in order to always be current. If you are interested in all of the articles, you can find them in the Facebook category.
In reverse chronological order.
- Twitter and Facebook Integration: Stop Making Every Tweet Your Facebook Status – This still irks me and makes me think that I shouldn’t be friends with people who do this on both platforms. But, some, I like so much that I forgive them. Unfortunately, I think most people who find this article via search are using it to integrate Twitter and Facebook rather than take my advice
- How to Add a Custom Tab to a Facebook Fan Page – This is a very popular article about creating a custom tab using Static FBML on a Facebook Fan Page.
- How to Remove a Facebook Application from Your News Stream – Yes, this is how you can hide Mafia Wars rather than un-friending everyone who plays it. ;-)
- How to Add a Facebook Application to Your News Stream that You Previously Removed – The way to do this has changed a couple of times since I first wrote this article but it seems that this article has the correct instructions. At least for now.
- How to Post Status Updates and Photos to Facebook Via Text Message – You can update Facebook via your cell phone. Here’s how to do it.
- How to Add the Facebook Fan Page Widget to Your Website – How to. I’ve heard reports recently, however, that Facebook broke this. If it’s not working, leave it be and try again in a couple days.
- Upcoming Facebook Changes to Boxes and the Box Tab that Will Impact Your Custom Fan Pages – Well, this article was written last November and it still hasn’t happened. I guess Facebook needed us to like and unlike things first. It is still listed as a change on the developer’s roadmap.
- How to Add a Flash Video to a Custom Facebook Fan Page Tab – Follow these step by step instructions and you be able to easily add a video to a custom tab on your Facebook fan page.
- FBML – How to Add a MP3 to a Tab on Facebook Fan Page – Again, step by step instructions to add music files to your custom Facebook fan page.
- FBML – How to Add a Share Button to Your Facebook Fan Page – Another FBML how to on adding the Share Button. Will, this be changed something else? What’s a good synonym for share? ;-)
- How to Change the Name of Your Facebook Page – An article of snark. You can’t change the name of your Facebook page once it’s selected.
- How to Receive Notifications for Comments on a Facebook Fan Page – There isn’t a good way to do this. This is a sort of workaround.
- How to Use FBML to Display Your Profile Photo on a Custom Facebook Fan Page – FBML code that can be used to display your profile pic.
- How to Add a Facebook Share Button With a Custom Logo – How to have your logo displayed when one of your website articles is shared on Facebook.
- How to Encourage People to Fan Your Facebook Page – Using the FBML visible to connection tag to hide special content from people who aren’t fans.

Hey Kim,
Facebook is a wonderful platform and I have seen that many people find it difficult to handle.. they prefer friendster and other social network.
I am sure those links up their will make the migrants come back to facebook.
Kim Woodbridge says
HI Rick – Really? I don’t know anyone who uses friendster. I know some who use myspace but not many.
Joanna Paterson says
Thanks for the round up Kim. I found a lot of these when I was internet searching for resources to help me make sense of FB and try and do the things I wanted to do… you’ve got a great set of resources here, thanks.
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Joanna- Thanks! I’m glad I’m showing up in search engines…

Facebook is so far from user-friendly, I find it too annoying to be useful — but then, I’m not forced to use it as a marketing tool. The idea that you have to go to Account to log off, for example, is nuts. Your tutorials look excellent, but I’m still at the stage of “how did I find that page again?” and “I can’t find the place where you list your website.” :-)
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Dot – It isn’t user friendly – not really. They keep moving things around. I never really thought about the logout button though – I’ve found when I close the browser tab it logs me out.
I never intended to use it as a marketing tool – it sort of ended up that way because I was trying to figure out how things worked and then wrote tutorials about it.

Helpful list indeed. Any more interest/action on our little discussion?
Btw, Yes I strongly believe you should do it, so yes, until you tell me to buzz off, I am going to continue to bug you about it. ;)

Hi Dennis – Yes, still thinking ;-) And now that duplicate content doesn’t seem like a real issue I may move forward more quickly.

I’m completely with you on FB and Twitter integration. At least 50% of my FB friends seem to be doing it though.

Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Vered – A LOT of people do it. Maybe a lot of people don’t have friends using both … I’m not sure. And a lot of articles suggest that people do it.

Informative list. With regards to number 1, I’ve seen a few people do this and have considered doing it myself but, haven’t yet. I thought it could be annoying, so I didn’t and now I’ll stop wondering about doing it lol.
While 15 is interesting. I don’t think it would work for any of my blogs though, or facebook pages. I think I might look into it more though :). Although personally, I dislike the pages/groups that require you to join to view more info, or even a picture. But if it’s worth taking a look at, it’s ok :).

Hi Bex – For #15 it would really depend on what was being offered for me to do it. For a really good ebook or a discount on something I already wanted to purchase I would do it. I haven’t used it on my own page either. I would like to but haven’t decided what it would be yet.
Colleen says
This is a great list of how-tos. We are starting to take Facebook a little more seriously nowadays, as Facebook is our 3rd best referrer of traffic to our website.
I emailed this one to myself as reference tool.

Hi Colleen – Great! I hope you find something useful.

Thanks Kim, I will. Btw, have you seen Newsweek’s article: http://www.businessinsider.com/10-reasons-to-delete-your-facebook-account-2010-5
Might be good fodder for a future blog article.

Hi Colleen – I did – thanks. There have been a lot of anti-Facebook articles recently. And I do think Facebook has gone too far this time.
goldendog says
Ok question is it possible to share a photo from another fan page to your own fan page?
My client wants to have on her fan page wall the images she is tagged in. I cannot figure out how to do it. I can see how to share to her personal profile but not to a fan page.
Thanks,
And this is a great list. I wanted the tab button and information on FBML.
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi – It looks like it can maybe be done with this
http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/fbml/photo
but it looks like your would need an “application”. You would then need to get the pid for each photo.
I haven’t tried this though.
goldendog says
Thanks, I will check this out.
I told her for right now to ask the person to please post to her fan page.
Happy I stumbled onto your site.
