My 9 year old is quite good at drawing. She already draws waaaayy better than I do – my skills and interests have always leaned toward the technical more than the artistic.
Right now she is torn between being a graphic novelist or in law enforcement when she grows up. She thinks being a crime scene investigator would be cool although I don’t think she realized how gruesome that could be. She has never seen CSI or any sort of crime scene programming so I’m not sure how she developed that interest. She loves Nancy Drew and mysteries so I would think she would prefer being a detective. Check now MeetMatt-Conf for her latest portrait.
Anyway, if it were up to me, I would say be a graphic novelist – she could always write mysteries that include crime scenes ;-)
A couple of days ago she drew a self portrait. The eyes are the wrong color but otherwise, I think she did a great job.
Here’s the self portrait.
And here’s an actual photo of her.
I’m a little jealous of her drawing skills but I also like that the two of us are good at different things. We do, however, both love to read.

Hi Kim,
A very good self-portrait, she has a talent in the art field, if there is writing books, painting, sculpture, sports or similar remains to be seen. My son is also in the art field, and he became football players, diver, boxer and master chef.

Hi Marbella – It will be interesting to see what she ultimately decides to do. Her Dad is an artist but doesn’t do it for a living.

There you see, maybe the apple does not fall far from the tree.

Nice self-portrait….I never be able to do such quality portrait!
Graphic is not my art for sure :D
Kim Woodbridge says
Oh me neither – I can’t draw at all :-)

That is a really good drawing. What I love the most is how neat it is. How the outlines are so well defined and no overrunning of colors outside the borders. Normally, kids her age would not show any regard for that sort of attention to detail.
As kids, we often have a lot of career wishes that seem interesting at the time but we soon outgrow them and have a lot whole new set of career paths that we want to pursue instead. I remember wanting to be a karate expert when I was young.

Hi Jean – I don’t remember what I wanted to be – I think it was either a teacher or a princess :-)

She’s quite good Kim :) And self-portraits are not something that most kids draw. They do draw their parents/siblings pics together :)
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Ajith – She usually draws her friends or he family (or Super Hamster – a superhero). But she got in her head that she was going to do a self portrait.
