As promised on the Facebook Developer’s Roadmap, the locations of notifications, requests and invitations will be changed/moved today.
I’m sure we will all enjoy spending time looking for the new locations and the interruption to our workflow ;-)
But, plus side is that we’ve been told in advance and were given an actual date for when the change would happen.
So, here’s what’s been changed with notifications and where they will now be located.
- Notifications are removed – application to user notifications and user to user notifications have been removed. The new way to communicate will be via the news stream, the Facebook inbox, and email. Applications may start requesting permission to email you, which I noticed with Networked Blogs at the end of last week.
- Requests moved to Inbox – requests will be located on a secondary tab in the Inbox. We are used to seeing them on the top right side of the Facebook home page. I’m not sure what the secondary tab is going to look like.
- Invites moved to Inbox – invites will also be moved to a tab in the Inbox. I’m not sure if will share the tab used by requests or if they will have their own tab.
Of course, these changes take precedent over things users really want like being able to change the name of the their fan page or transferring ownership of the fan page to someone else.

Hi Adrenalynn – Asking why with Facebook? Will prob. never get an answer.
Colleen says
I welcome the new changes. We’ll see if the changes are good or bad for productivity.

Hi Colleen – They might help streamline things. The issue I see for me is remembering to check my FB inbox – I’m really not in the habit.

Everyone always resists and complains about changes. We’ll see whether these turn out to be good changes or not. It seems that they try to do whats best but just end up getting a lot of people upset.

Hi Oscar – It’s true that people are resistant to change. I just wish that FB would focus on features that we really want like being able to transfer ownership of a fan page rather than interface changes.

Notification removal will be great for my inbox. :)

Hi Vered – You can turn those off so they aren’t emailed to you anymore. I finally did – well, I was also testing another program. I never turned them back on – there are just too many of them.
Satu says
I’m with you Kim, I don’t really see the need for this change over other much more pressing issues with pages especially, like the name change issue, sigh.
p.s. I love your blog!!
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Satu – Thank you! Yep! Change the things we really want. FB needs to at least pretend that they listen to their users.

something more to learn…I still want to know how to get the Democratic fundraising posts off my news page…I do not know how it got there…and everything I attempt to do something like garden patch – I get a virus that ruins my email systems….and I have to run spyware, adware, and anti virus comprehensive scans…then remove ask.com again off my home page?…I am still challenged to learn to do these things…so I do not post pictures and just use it to respond to others and post my posts?
I wish it were not so puzzling

Hi Patricia – That’s too bad. I haven’t had too many problems with Facebook and technical issues.
I’m not sure why you can’t remove the application or page.

I wish Facebook would stop faffing around with all this moving things from one place to another and would work on something useful like a way to manage who can and can’t send you Event invites!

Hi Lucy – Agreed!!!
Lucy Beer says
Is it just me, or can I no longer filter my news feed according to the Pages I’m fans of? I swear I used to be able to do that….So this means that unless you see a status update from a Page in real time, it’s probably going to get buried. Could this be intentional by Facebook to get companies to post to their Pages more to stay relevant in the News stream? Or just an oversight?

Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Lucy – It isn’t just you – this last update really messed up filtering by fan pages.
The best thing to do is go to the Home page and then Friends on the left side. Click on the Create A List button. You can then go through this and select all of the Fan Pages and put them in one list or just select certain ones for a list.
For some reason, the fan pages aren’t showing the images – just a question mark – but when they are put in a list they do have their logos.
Fortunately, I had made some lists prior to the update. I haven’t found a better way to deal with this.
