What Version of WordPress are you Using?
At the beginning of July, weblogtools Collection ran a survey asking people what version of WordPress people were using.
71% of those who responded were using the current version, 2.8. I didn’t think the results were that surprising because most of the people who read that blog are staying current on WordPress version, themes and plugins.
The survey did, however, make me wonder what the results of this poll would be on a site where the readers are more varied; a site like this one. ;-)
So, please participate – I’m really curious to find out the results. And maybe I’ll tell you what version I am using …

I am using 2.8.4 but I am sick to death of constantly upgrading.

Hi Carla – 2.9 is supposed to be released at the end of October. But I think that with all these security updates that it might be delayed.
August 24, 2009 at 7:48 am
Well its far easier to upgrade with the auto-upgrader in the latest version. For those people who are still using early versions of wordpress, it really is worth bothering to upgrade this last time to the latest version, because from here on out you simply have to hit the upgrade button and it will take care of the rest for you. Not to mention the security hazzard of using an older, vulnerable version…

Hi Brendan – The auto-upgrade is a nice feature but it doesn’t work for everyone. Part of the reason 2.8 was upgraded to 2.8.1 was due to problems with the auto-upgrade. Also, some hosts are not compatible with it. For example, I can’t use it. I don’t mind, though, because I prefer to upgrade manually.

2.8.4 for me. As you know, Kim, I’m an upgrade junkie (though this issues I had with Thesis and 2.7.1 were well-documented, ha!).

August 24, 2009 at 9:16 pm
I’m still holding onto 2.7.1. I remember reading about how there were all of these security updates, and just a few days after upgrading to 2.7.1., I ended up getting all of my sites hacked. So I’m just a bit wary of upgrading again and facing that same challenge.

Well, I got into the 2.8.X league recently :) Not very excited about it yet as I do not see any major improvement. However, I am happy that the admin panel now is spread out well. I used to hate the way various subforms and sections were cluttered in 2.7.X

Hi Ajith – 2.8+ has been a little disappointing. My favorite feature is the widgets section, which is so much easier to use. I hope the move went well.
August 25, 2009 at 3:48 am
I’m usually at the latest version. But Kim, you’re version is laid bare for all to see in your page source…unless you cleverly spoofed it, of course. ;-)
August 25, 2009 at 8:27 am
Hi David – yeah, clever people can easily figure it out :-) I know you tend to upgrade sooner rather than later.
August 25, 2009 at 8:53 am
I never used to…I sat on a much earlier version for months, years even, while everyone raced ahead. These days, I give the early adopters a day or two to reveal serious flaws and then take the leap.

I’m using 2.8.4 (thanks to being selected as Kim’s “upgrade to 2.8 contest). Being a formal Drupal user, it has been great coming over to WordPress Making the move reinvigorated my blogging and the upgrades are a piece of cake compared to the Drupal upgrades.

Hi Rick – Interesting. Drupal upgrades are complicated? I’ve spent very little time using it and it was awhile back when I was still a Movable Type fan.
And thanks :-)
August 30, 2009 at 4:07 pm
For PHP/SQL weenies like me, they are brutal…none of that mamby, pamby one click upgrade like we have now at WP. Drupal is extremely robust, however, and a programmer can make it sing.

I just took the poll and about 80% are current with their version. What are the other 20% doing :)
Common people, upgrade :)

Hi Ravi – I thin 80% is really good. Some people wait to upgrade because they have customized the core files or are worried about plugin compatibility.

I have 2.8.4 – as I mentioned in another post, Im new to wordpress and am realizing that it needs to be updated regularly. If I dont update my blog wordpress version is it a real problem? Thanks!
.-= Ale @ Vampire Halloween Costumes´s last blog ..Scary Vampire Costumes =-.

Hi Ale – It can be a problem. There was a recent hack that affected versions lower than 2.8.4 WordPress typically has 2-3 major releases per year and then security updated in between. It can be a chore to keep up with all of the upgrades.
September 14, 2009 at 12:48 pm
