Last Saturday was the first week for my farm share. I was so excited about it that I thought I would share :-)
Please note that I am not a food photographer, which is fairly obvious. One friend thought that the bag of maple granola was a bag of mushrooms.
The one downside to picking up the food (at the park three blocks away), even while using Fastline tractors, is that because it isn’t a habit yet, I’m afraid of forgetting to go get the box. I’ve written it on the kitchen calendar and asked my daughter to remind me, but still have this nagging worry that I’m not going to remember.
This was the first week’s booty.
- 1/2 dozen eggs
- strawberries
- cheese
- onions
- asparagus
- lettuce
- potatoes
- maple granola (not mushrooms)
I decided to cook something using only items from the food box (plus spices) and made garlic and oil roasted potatoes and asparagus with grated cheese. Plus strawberries! The kid wasn’t home today so I was able to make whatever I wanted and only made a small amount. Plus, if she had been home, I wouldn’t have had strawberries. She would have eaten the entire thing. :-)
This isn’t chicken in the can but I thought it was super yummy.

Very cool! Do you get to pick out your own items each week? I think that would be my biggest challenge given my diet is so limited. By the way, I love the photos!

Hi Carla – The produce items are based on what is in season and available that week. They will, however, let people make substitutions if
they get something they can’t eat.

Spending a weekend in the farm eating organic foods sounds like a a long lost memory to me.

Hi – I picked up that food – I don’t think I’ve even spent a weekend at a farm.
Jim says
Awesome. Looks and sounds delicious.
I remember reading on the list that it was granola. I don’t think I would have said granola if i didn’t know. I don’t think i would have said mushrooms. Maybe bran?
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Jim – Thanks. I thought mushrooms was a strange guess too.

“garlic and oil roasted potatoes and asparagus with grated cheese” – sounds and looks great!
I know what you mean about strawberries. I rarely get to eat berries, even though I buy some every week. :)

Hi Vered – It was really good. I made it again the next day and it came
out even better.
Fortunately, I’m not that fond of fruit – I usually have to make myself eat it.
And I like blackberries a lot more than strawberries.

Wow, livin’ off the land!
I actually think the photo is not too bad.
And dont’ forget the box! Okay?

Hi Jannie – I put the food in my backpack and gave the box back them – I
certainly don’t need it and then they have boxes for next week. Most people leave the boxes.
Tracy says
That looks wonderful. I forgot to sign up for our CSA, which I guess is okay because I’d forget to get the box. Fresh potatoes, asparagus and strawberries are my favorite! Did you try the eggs yet?
Food photography is tricky, I still don’t have the hang of it. You will notice I take a lot of photos outside because natural light helps my photos look not quite so bad. One day I’m going to get off my butt and make a light box so I can do food photos indoors.

Hi Tracy – I haven’t tried the eggs yet but all the asparagus is gone. :-)
Part of the problem with the 2nd photo is that I wanted to eat rather than
fuss with the photos ;-)

I remember your post about the farm share, at least i think i do. i have to go back and read it.
i can’t see the pictures here at work, but i saw them on your flickr page. i love potatoes..don’t like strawberries though. :(
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Valerie – They block flickr but not my site? ;-) The place I used to work
blocked both although I could click through to my site. They are the same photos you already saw.
The previous article wasn’t just about the farm share but was one part of the article.

I totally hear you about being anxious about forgetting these weekly tasks! My issue: Moving the car for street cleaning. My way of dealing with it so far is by setting a recurring alarm to go off a half hour before street cleaning time each week.
However, I’m still concerned that I’ll be somewhere else far-ish from home when the alarm goes off — then I’d be well aware that I need to move the car, but have no means by which to move it….

Hi Siel,
I put everything on my google calendars – I have a bunch that feed into one that are all color coded – projects, home, kid … I even have clean litter box on there so I don’t forget. The calendar system works, if I look
at the calendar.
Do you have a car now or is this when you borrow one?
Adrenalynn says
Wow that is AWESOME!
I come from a very small town and I remember that we used to drive to a local farm to buy eggs when I was a kid, but that was pretty much it. It’s still one of my fondest memories, though! I love the idea of getting food this way, and I wonder why we don’t do it ourselves? There are several farms not too far from where we live that sell food, and it wouldn’t be too difficult to stop by once in a while. I’ll have to look into that!
Adrenalynn´s last blog post – Where I get all contemplative on a Wednesday
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Adrenalynn – I grew up in a really small town too – we used to go to a farm in the summer to buy produce. We used to get the best corn. At the time it was 10 cents an ear and I remember my Mom thinking that was too much … that was a long time ago. The woman who lived there had married a man with the last name Bay and her name was Kay. “Get in the car, we’re going to see Kay Bay” lol
You should see if any of the farms have the farm shares – it’s becoming
more and more common and it’s a really good deal.

Roasted potatoes with glazed asparagus/garlic :yum…and that too from an organic farm, right?
I remember your post on unique recipe sites… Did you search for a recipe with asparagus + potatoes + garlic? :)
Ajith Edassery´s last blog post – Blogs are more vulnerable to hacking than other websites!
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Ajith,
I did use one of those recipe sites – and I meant to put that in this article and forgot. There actually wasn’t much for asparagus and potatoes except oven roasted recipes.
I made the same recipe again the next day and it came out much better the 2nd time. :-)
