Last week I posted an article on my facebook fan page about how ownership of a fan or business page can’t be transferred to another user (Facebook really needs to change this).
Someone commented on that post about what a problem this is and then asked me how to get notifications when someone posts to your fan page.
Right now there isn’t a way to get notifications on wall posts or comments on items I post but there is a workaround that helps a little.
If you allow fans to post directly to your wall, there isn’t a way to get a notification of this. As a little bit of a digression I think you should allow fans to post – it takes more monitoring to makes sure people aren’t posting spam but if you don’t allow the posts you aren’t building much of a community. I try to check for posts once or twice a day.
You can, however, get notifications about comments left on wall posts that you have made. What you need to do is “like” the post. You know how you get notifications on anything you like or comment on in the news stream? Well, the same thing will happen if you “like” you own post.
The downside is that it looks a little lame for the admin to be liking their own posts but I don’t think most people will really give it much thought.

Good points, Kim and I wondered about that. I guess I will be liking my own posts soon. I do check my DesignResumes FB page often though. This post will land on the wall next. In addition, I noticed that now that FB changed the e-mail (i think without asking me) from my regular e-mail to my gmail account, I don’t see the notifications. I have gmail coming into Outlook but I need to move it up higher. I didn’t read all the notifications before either but it was a good back up plan.

I had that same problem – I fixed it by going to the filters and typing in “@facebookmail.com” and indicating not to ever send to spam any emails from that address.

Hi Julie – That’s odd about the email. I wonder why they would do that. Denise, below, said the same thing happened to her.

It’s like you read my mind! I was just lamenting that. There are some things that Facebook has neglected, that really surprise me. Good work around though. Thanks!

Hi Christine – Well, it looks like a partial workaround – a fan also has to be a friend for it to work as noted by Karen here in the comments. My tests must have all been with friends and I didn’t notice this.

Hi LIsa Marie Mary – Thanks – at least it’s something.

Thanks for posting this! I tested it on my fan page and found out that this only works if you are FRIENDS with the commenters on your personal profile page. I did not get notified of comments from people who are only FANs. Which is really disappointing but at least it’s something!

Hi Karen – Ugh. I didn’t realize this in my tests – thanks for being more thorough than I was. I will update the article with this info.

Yes , if the commenters are not your friends, you won’t get the notifications.

That’s how I feel about ‘Discussion’ tab too, no notification if there’s an update aside from checking them from time to time. I’m really hoping after implementing the facebook mail, the support team can at least include the alerts as part of the feature. That will be brilliant.

Hi Ching Ya – The new mail app could take care a lot of these issues. Discussions have a lot of problems – no notifications and can’t even search them.
